Joy in the Journey

It sounds so cliché to say that the joy is in the journey, but isn't it so true? Sometimes the journey seems muddy, dark, with rocks, thorns, and ominous creatures. The reality is that if that's how a person perceives their journey, that's very likely how they'll perceive their destination.
Let me give you an example. Have you ever known someone that can find something to complain about or criticize no matter what's going on? Then they announce something fun they're doing, and they end up complaining all the way through that too? Ever wonder why that is? I can tell you. They've forgotten to appreciate.
Of course there's something to complain about in every moment of the day. "Is this work day over yet?" "It's too hot." "It's too cold." "I'm sooo ready for a day off."
There's also something to appreciate in each moment too. "I've been so productive today!" "Catch a glimpse of that glorious sun." "Let's play in the snow!"
It's often a matter of what a person wants to see, wants to focus on. It's easy to allow the most obvious observation to direct our thinking, especially if it opposes our preferences and desires. Did you know it is possible to observe the undesirable and then deliberately focus on something positive?
Put it into action. Maybe you'll be able to just remember that and start doing it. However, for some people, noting points of appreciation may be a new concept. Start with baby steps: "It's so hot, but look at how beautiful that sun is." "My boss is such a stickler, but at least he's funny about it." "It's been raining all day, but I'm glad the grass is getting some water."
Try it. Don't beat yourself up if you find yourself in that negative spiral. Remember that the longer you spend thinking a certain way or doing things a certain way, the easier and quicker it becomes. See how much better you feel after a few days of doing this, and then add to that better overall feeling by continuing to find something to appreciate.
